Giordana Women's AV Extreme Winter Jacket Info

The Giordana Women's AV Extreme Winter Jacket is the cold-conditions version of the AV Extreme line. Giordana built it for winter training rides and says it packs the performance of much bulkier jackets into a lightweight garment.

Insulation and protection

The interior uses 130g Polartec Alpha Direct. Giordana describes the lofted fibers as inherently hydrophobic, so the lining continuously releases body heat and perspiration before it saturates. The company rates the jacket from the high 40s down to the low 20s F.

The outer fabric is treated with Acqua Zero Eco for wind and rain protection. A two-layer DVstretch membrane covers the front, back, shoulders and front of the arms, while the side panels and underarms use a three-layer membrane. Giordana says the combination stays breathable enough for both sprinting and cruising in the cold.

Fit and details

The fit is slightly relaxed but body conforming, with room for a very lightweight thermal jersey or a winter base layer underneath. The collar is high and fleece lined, the cuffs are elastic and straight cut, and a reflective drop tail sits below the rear pockets. A zippered front side pocket gives you somewhere to put keys or a card. Reflective pixel fabric and accents on the back pocket and left wrist help with visibility.

The jacket comes in Avio blue and black, sizes XS through 3XL. Care is a cold machine wash at 30° C, no bleach, no iron, and hang or lay flat to dry.

The RA Perspective

This is the cold end of Giordana's women's AV range. It uses 130g Alpha Direct insulation, and Giordana rates the jacket for the high 40s down to the low 20s F. If your winter rides regularly start below freezing, this is the one to look at first.

What stands out is how Giordana handled the layers. The two-layer membrane on the front, back and shoulders blocks wind, and the three-layer membrane at the sides and underarms adds protection there. The Alpha Direct lining is meant to pass moisture along instead of soaking it up, so you do not end up cold and damp when you slow down.

The honest tradeoff is that it is built for the cold. Above the high 40s you will likely overheat, and in that range the lighter Lyte jacket is the better pick. The finish is water and wind resistant, not a waterproof shell, so heavy rain will wet it through over time.

We would suggest this jacket for riders who train outdoors through real winters, or for anyone who runs cold and wants a margin of warmth. Pair it with a thin base layer and a light jersey, which is the combination Giordana designed it around.
