Giordana Men's AV Extreme Jacket Info

The Giordana Men's AV Extreme Jacket is a cold-weather jacket with a tough, high-density outer fabric and a soft insulated lining. AV stands for Aqua e Vento, water and wind, and Giordana designed this jacket to deliver the performance of much bulkier jackets without the bulk.

Insulation and weather protection

The lining is 110g PrimaLoft insulation made from recycled materials. PrimaLoft was originally developed for the U.S. army as a water-resistant synthetic alternative to down. The outer fabric is treated with DWR Hydro CO for water and wind resistance, and Giordana says the microporous membrane is breathable and quick drying, so heat and sweat are not trapped on rides that start cold and end cooler.

Fit and details

Giordana cuts the AV Extreme slightly relaxed while still body conforming, with enough warmth built in to wear over a very lightweight thermal jersey or a winter base layer. A high, ergonomic collar is fleece lined, the cuffs are soft elastic, and the straight-cut waistband and cuffs have slight stretch for movement.

Two-way windproof zippers close the front. A longer drop tail sits below the rear pockets for protection from weather, and the three external rear pockets are gusseted with drainage. Highly reflective dual stripes on the rear pocket and other reflective accents help in low light.

The jacket is made in Italy and comes in black and khaki, sizes XS through 3XL. Care is a cold machine wash at 30° C, no bleach, no iron, and hang or lay flat to dry.

The RA Perspective

The AV Extreme is Giordana's all-rounder for cold weather, and the PrimaLoft fill is the reason. It is meant to hold warmth without the stuffed, puffy feel that makes some winter jackets awkward on the bike. Giordana cuts it slightly relaxed, so a winter base layer or a very light thermal jersey underneath is the intended setup, not a heavy jersey.

We like the practical details. The drop tail covers your lower back, and the gusseted rear pockets have drainage, which matters on wet rides. The reflective stripes on the rear pocket make it easier for drivers to pick you out at dusk. The fleece-lined collar and soft cuffs close the gaps where cold air gets in.

The tradeoff to know about is the weather rating. The outer fabric is DWR treated and Giordana calls it water and wind resistant, which handles cold mist and road spray, but it is not a waterproof shell. In a steady downpour you will get wet eventually. Giordana also does not publish a temperature range for this jacket, so judge it as a cold-weather piece and expect to adjust with your base layer.

This is the jacket for riders who commute or train through winter and want one insulated layer that does not feel bulky. Check the relaxed fit against your normal size, and think about the layers you plan to wear beneath it.
