Capo G.S. Padrone Wind Vest Info

The Capo G.S. Padrone Wind Vest is a lightweight, packable cycling vest for variable conditions: cool mornings, exposed ridgelines and long descents on days that are otherwise mild. Capo rates it for about 45 to 65°F over a base layer, which covers a big share of the riding year.

Two fabrics, two jobs

The chest and neck use an Italian windproof and waterproof membrane fabric. That's the part of the vest facing the wind, and it's what keeps your core warm when you crest a climb wet with sweat and start downhill. The back is a 4-way stretch mesh, so heat and moisture escape freely and the vest moves with you instead of ballooning out behind. The result is a wind vest that blocks the chill at the front without turning into a plastic bag.

Fit details

The anatomic cut is shaped for the riding position, and Capo's waist elastic keeps the hem sealed and in place, with no gap at the lower back when you're stretched out on the bike. The two-way zipper has a lockable slider, so you can crack it open from the bottom for air without unzipping the whole front.

Because it folds small, the Wind Vest is easy to carry in a jersey pocket all day and pull out when the weather turns. Made in Italy, it comes in Red Earth or black, sizes XS through XXL. If you only own one extra layer for spring, summer mountain rides and fall, a wind vest like this is the one to have.

The RA Perspective

If you ride anywhere with hills or changeable weather, a good wind vest earns its place in your pocket more often than any other layer. The Padrone Wind Vest is one we'd steer people toward because of the back panel. A lot of wind vests use the same windproof fabric all the way around, which traps sweat and leaves you clammy. The stretch mesh back here lets it breathe, so you can leave it on longer.

The Italian membrane up front blocks wind and handles a light shower, which is the whole point of carrying it. Put it on at the top of a climb and the descent goes from miserable to comfortable.

Since the back is mesh, this isn't a vest for heavy rain or cold below the mid-40s. That's where the Padrone Thermal Vest comes in. The fit is also close and race-oriented, so it sits best over a jersey rather than a bulky layer.

We see this as the vest for the rider who does long road rides from spring through fall and wants one dependable extra layer. It packs small, the Red Earth color is easy to spot in traffic, and it handles both the cool start and the windy summit.
