These are the Q36.5 bibs we point people toward when they want comfort over a long day and don't need the most expensive short in the range. The pattern is the story here. With no central seam and fewer seams overall, there is less to rub against you when the ride goes long.

The raw-cut hems are the other thing you notice. There are no grippers, so nothing digs in at the leg. Some riders prefer a bit more grip on the thigh, and if you do, check that the hold works for you before you commit. We would also point out that the Essential leaves out the premium extras of the higher Q36.5 models, which is part of what makes it approachable.

Chamois feel is personal, and we would encourage you to read the details on the pad and try them out on a few rides before you decide. If you have been through a lot of bib shorts and none of them feels right after three hours, this is a reasonable place to start.
