Giordana Women's FR-C Lyte Winter Jacket Info

The Giordana Women's FR-C Lyte Winter Jacket combines breathability and warmth in a light package, using a 3-layer weather-resistant outer fabric, an absorbent fleece inner layer, and back and underarm panels that Giordana says disperse heat on demand. It comes from the FR-C collection, which was originally designed for Pro Team riders.

The membrane in the outer fabric has been updated to stretch for a snug fit, with nano-pores that Giordana says improve breathability. Thermal-welded straight-cut cuffs seal at the wrist, a 2-way zipper with a wind flap handles ventilation, and three rear pockets have adjustable gussets. The back and underarm panels are 250g Blizzard fabric.

The fit is a snug race cut that Giordana recommends for training and interval work. The brand designed the jacket to be worn with a jersey or base layer underneath, where it provides the most warmth. It comes in black, cypress green, sand and stone, in sizes XS through 3XL, and is made in Italy. Machine wash cold at 30°C, no bleach or iron, and hang or lay flat to dry.

The RA Perspective

If you ride hard in the cold, a jacket that traps heat is only half of what you want. The other half is somewhere for that heat to go once the pace picks up, and the FR-C Lyte Winter Jacket is designed around that. The back and underarm panels are Blizzard fleece, which Giordana says lets heat disperse on demand, while the front and sleeves use the weather-resistant laminate.

We think it suits riders who treat winter as a training block. The fit is snug and race-oriented, the zipper runs both ways with a wind flap, and the three rear pockets hold gussets that adjust to what you carry. The thermal-welded cuffs stay close to the wrist, which helps keep drafts out.

On the tradeoffs, the outer fabric is water and wind resistant, not waterproof, so it copes with light wet weather but is not a rain jacket. The jacket is also meant to work as one part of a layering setup, and Giordana says it gives the most warmth over a jersey or base layer. Because it is cut snugly, it is worth thinking about what you plan to wear under it before choosing a size. There are seven sizes from XS to 3XL to work with.

For cold-weather intervals and fast training rides, this is the piece we would reach for first.
