Giordana Men's G-Shield Thermal Bib Tight Info

The Giordana Men's G-Shield Thermal Bib Tight is a fleece-lined cycling bib tight Giordana designed for three-season riding, from fall through winter and back into spring. It comes in black in sizes XS through 3XL, with rain and wind protection built into the fabric.

Fabric and water repellency

The tight is made from Blizzard, a 300-gram fleece-lined fabric with an Acqua Zero Eco water repellent treatment. Giordana says the treatment bonds to the fibers at a nano level to form a hydrophobic coating, so the tights absorb little water and stay lighter in a heavy downpour than untreated fabric would. The company also says G-Shield garments keep their breathability when soaked, which helps with core temperature management on cold, wet days. The material is 76% nylon and 24% elastane.

Construction

One seam runs down the back of each leg. With less stitching exposed to the elements, Giordana says water and cold are less likely to work their way in while you are riding hard. Internal elastic grippers at the ankles hold the tights in place, and two large reflective stripes on the calves add visibility in low light.

The straight-cut waist is made for comfort. The bib uppers are black elastic with woven G-Shield lettering in bright blue, and a mesh panel at the back adds breathability and support while holding the aloe vera-infused Cirro-S chamois in place. The tights are made in Italy and machine wash cold.

The RA Perspective

The G-Shield tight is for the rider who keeps riding when the forecast turns cold and damp. The 300-gram fleece lining is the warmth, and the Acqua Zero Eco treatment is what keeps road spray and light rain from soaking through. That combination is why we think of it as a fall-to-spring piece and not just a deep-winter one.

A few details are worth noting. The single seam at the back of each leg means less stitching for water to find, and the reflective stripes on the calves matter on short days when you are finishing a ride in the dark. The Cirro-S chamois is the same aloe vera-infused pad Giordana uses elsewhere in its range, and it sits under a mesh back panel that keeps the bib from feeling heavy.

The tradeoff is that water repellent is not waterproof. In a steady, hours-long rain the fabric will eventually take on moisture, and Giordana's own claim is that it absorbs little, not that it stays dry. The fleece lining also makes this a cold-weather tight, so it will feel warm on a mild 55-degree day. Size carefully if you plan to layer, since the cut is intended to sit close.

We would recommend it to commuters and training riders who ride year-round in a wet climate and want one tight that covers most of the cold season.
