Giordana sells the Giordana Men's FR-C Pro Thermal Long Sleeve Jersey as the essential jersey for cooler weather: a low-profile thermal top for fall, winter and early spring. The fleece-like fabric is meant to hold warmth without bulk, and the aerodynamic fit leaves room to add layers.

What the fabric does

The thermal interior is lightweight and wicks moisture away quickly, according to Giordana, and the 4-way stretch aids breathability during high-intensity efforts. Giordana describes the material as Pro Team issue, the same fabric as Team Astana, with a soft, lofty, fleece-like feel and a high thread count per square centimeter for warmth. It is 83% nylon and 17% elastane. Giordana says the jersey works across a wide range of conditions and can be extended to colder rides with base layers, vests or a jacket.

Details

The collar is ergonomically designed for warmth and comfort. Three rear pockets sit under a large, deep reflective fourth pocket with a zipper. A reflective Giordana logo is on the left arm and a reflective strip runs along the rear waistband for low-light visibility.

It is made in Italy and comes in black, Avio blue, mustard yellow or Siena orange, sized XS to 3XL.

The RA Perspective

The FR-C Pro Thermal jersey is one of the pieces we would call a workhorse for the cooler half of the year. It has a soft, fleece-like inside and a thin profile, so you can wear it on its own on a cool day or put it under a jacket when the temperature drops. Giordana uses the same fabric as its Pro Team kit, and the 4-way stretch keeps it from restricting you in a tucked position.

We like the pocket arrangement. Three open pockets handle food and a spare tube, and the deep zippered pocket above them is the place for a phone and keys. The reflective details on the arm and waistband are small additions that matter once the days get shorter. The collar is shaped for warmth without choking you.

There are limits. This is a lightweight thermal jersey, not an insulated jacket, and Giordana itself says it needs base layers, a vest or a jacket for colder rides. It is also not a windproof or waterproof piece, so on a wet or windy day it will be a mid-layer at best. The cut is aerodynamic and close, which suits riding fast but may feel snug if you wear a heavy base layer under it.

We would reach for this jersey across fall and early spring, and for winter as the layer under a shell. It is the piece to buy first if you are building a cool-weather kit.
