de-rosa-collezione-acciaio-frameset
De Rosa Collezione Acciaio Frameset

There is a particular kind of ride that only a handbuilt steel road bike can offer — one that asks you to slow down just enough to feel the road beneath you, to notice the way the frame absorbs the texture of tarmac rather than simply transmitting it. The De Rosa Collezione Acciaio Frameset is that kind of bike. Built by hand in Italy from Columbus steel tubing, it carries the weight of a framebuilding tradition that stretches back to Ugo De Rosa's Milan workshop in 1953. This is not a nostalgia exercise. It is a considered argument for what steel, done properly, still does better than almost anything else.

The Collezione Acciaio is constructed using traditional lugged joinery — a method that connects the tubes through precisely machined steel lugs rather than welds. The result is a frameset that is as visually striking as it is mechanically coherent. Lugged construction demands a level of fit and finish that exposes any imprecision immediately, which is exactly why De Rosa continues to use it. Every lug junction on the Acciaio reflects decades of accumulated craft knowledge, finished to a standard that makes the frameset as much an object of appreciation at rest as it is in motion.

On the road, Columbus steel delivers a ride character that carbon frames are still working to replicate — a compliance that works with the rider rather than against them, smoothing out road chatter on long days without ever feeling vague or soft under power. Whether you are holding a steady tempo on a classic Italian fondo route or pushing into a headwind on a long weekend loop, the Acciaio rewards patient, committed riding. It is a road frameset built for cyclists who understand that performance and pleasure are not mutually exclusive.

Design Benefits

Lugged Steel Construction: Traditional lug-and-tube joinery is not merely aesthetic — it creates a mechanical bond between frame tubes that distributes stress across a broader contact area than a weld. On the road, this translates to a frameset that feels cohesive and composed, with none of the localized stiffness that can make modern frames feel harsh on rough surfaces.

Columbus Steel Ride Quality: Columbus tubing has a long-established reputation for combining tensile strength with a degree of natural flex that synthetic materials work hard to imitate. The Acciaio's steel construction absorbs road vibration progressively, keeping your hands and back fresher across long-distance riding — without sacrificing the responsiveness you need when the road tilts upward.

Italian Handbuilt Craftsmanship: Each frame is assembled by hand in Italy, a process that demands close human oversight at every stage. The tolerances involved in lugged construction leave no room for imprecision — tubes must be cut, fitted, and finished with exacting care. The outcome is a frameset built to last decades, not seasons.

Ten-Size Range: With sizes spanning 48cm through 57cm, the Acciaio is designed to accommodate a wide range of riders without compromise. A proper fit on a steel road bike matters more than on most — the frame's ride character is built around its geometry, and the size range ensures that character reaches the rider as intended.

Final Take

The De Rosa Collezione Acciaio is a road frameset for riders who have thought carefully about what they want from a bicycle — and arrived at an answer that has nothing to do with trend cycles or specification checklists. It suits the cyclist drawn to long roads, careful riding, and objects made with genuine intent. De Rosa has been building frames this way for over seventy years. The Acciaio makes a compelling case for why that still matters.

De Rosa
Blue /
