Capo G.S. Padrone Thermal Vest Info

The Capo G.S. Padrone Thermal Vest is an insulated cycling vest for cold rides where a full jacket is too much but a wind vest isn't enough. Capo built it with the shoulder seasons in mind: the long descent after a hard climb in late fall or early spring, when the air still bites and you've had enough of the trainer.

Insulation up front, breathability behind

The chest and neck are covered in an Italian windproof and waterproof membrane fabric, backed by PrimaLoft insulation. PrimaLoft is a synthetic insulation known for staying warm when damp, which suits a garment you'll be sweating into on the way up and relying on for warmth on the way down. The sides and back switch to Super Roubaix, a brushed stretch fabric that lets heat and moisture out where you produce the most of it and moves with you when you're out of the saddle.

Fit and closure

Capo's waist elastic keeps the hem from riding up, and the cut is close enough to avoid flapping at speed. The two-way Vislon YKK zipper has a lockable slider, so you can open it from the bottom for ventilation on a climb and close it fully for the descent.

Capo rates the vest for roughly 30 to 50°F when worn over a winter jersey and base layer. It packs down small enough to carry in a jersey pocket until you need it, which makes it a practical addition to a cold-weather kit rather than a second jacket. Made in Italy, in black or Red Earth, sizes XS through XXL.

For riders who run warm, or who prefer to regulate temperature by adding and removing layers, the Thermal Vest covers a lot of the same ground as a heavier jacket while leaving the arms free to breathe.

The RA Perspective

The thermal vest is a layer a lot of riders don't know they need until they try one. Most people own a wind vest and a winter jacket and spend the shoulder season choosing the wrong one. This sits between them: a warm, insulated front with a breathable back, so your core stays warm without the whole torso overheating on a climb.

The PrimaLoft chest is what makes it work on cold descents. That's where the wind hits hardest, and a thin wind vest doesn't hold much heat once you're coasting at speed. With a good long-sleeve winter jersey underneath, this vest takes you a long way into the cold.

Worth knowing: since your arms are only covered by the jersey, it won't match a full thermal jacket at the bottom of the range. Below about 35°F we'd add arm warmers or a heavier jersey. The insulation also means it packs bigger than a lightweight wind vest, though it still fits in a rear pocket.

We like it for riders who run hot, and for long rides with big temperature swings, where you want to strip a layer at the top of the climb and put it back on for the descent. It's a smart addition if you already own a good thermal jersey and want more range from it.
