Tacx Nera Smart Trainer w/Zwift Cog and Click Info

The Tacx Nera Smart Trainer w/Zwift Cog and Click is a belt-technology smart trainer from Garmin Tacx, built for riders who want indoor training that feels closer to riding outside. It offers up to 2,200 watts of resistance and simulates gradients up to 20 percent, with a stated measurement accuracy of plus or minus 1 percent. The trainer measures power and cadence itself, so you do not need a separate sensor. This version includes the Zwift Cog and Click, which enables virtual gear changes in Zwift and Rouvy rather than relying on a physical cassette.

The Nera's most distinctive feature is its integrated Motion Pods, which allow movement while you pedal instead of locking the bike rigidly in place. Garmin says compatible apps support virtual steering, which is useful for gameplay and for riders who like to stay engaged on a long indoor session. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi, ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy, including BLE bridging, so it can pair with most training apps, computers and head units. Setup runs through the Tacx Training App, which includes free workouts, while route videos, challenges and other content require a premium subscription. Garmin Coach plans, Edge computers and Garmin watches can also control sessions, and Race Mode is designed to simulate attacks and intermediate sprints.

Practical details help here. The Nera has an integrated carrying handle and fold-away feet for moving and storing it between sessions, and it works with the separate Tacx Alpine incline simulator if you want physical tilt for virtual climbs and descents. Garmin lists road, gravel, mountain, triathlon and time trial bikes as suitable, though axle and drivetrain standards vary, so check your bike's compatibility before you order. This is a fit for riders who train indoors through the winter or on weekday evenings and want a smart trainer that puts motion, connectivity and virtual shifting in one unit.

The RA Perspective

The Nera is new from Garmin Tacx, and we have not spent time on one yet, so this is based on the published specs rather than ride feel. The Motion Pods are the headline. Allowing movement while you pedal is a different approach from a trainer that holds the bike fixed, and it is the feature we would most want to test before saying how natural it feels.

The numbers are solid for a trainer at this level: 2,200 watts of maximum resistance, simulated grades up to 20 percent and a stated accuracy of plus or minus 1 percent. Most riders will not reach those limits, which is a good thing on a trainer you want to keep for years.

This version uses the Zwift Cog and Click, so shifting is virtual rather than through a physical cassette. If you ride in Zwift or Rouvy, that is a convenience. If you want a physical cassette on the trainer, Tacx also offers a version with a pre-fitted 11-speed cassette.

Two things to know before buying. Garmin has not published weight, footprint or noise figures that we could find, so plan your space and your living situation accordingly. And while workouts in the Tacx app are free, route videos and challenges need a premium subscription.

We would point this at riders who train indoors regularly, use Zwift or Rouvy, and want more than a fixed platform.
